‘My name is Rohini.
I won’t tell you which one of these happy faces I am. I will only tell you that a happy face can hide a broken heart. When I was young I was happy with my family, although my father drank alot. When I was 12 my father died. Then my mother had to work very hard to support us 3 children. When I was 15, my mother got hepatitus from bad water… But she was too worried about us to stop working. She didn’t take care of herself. She became very sick and died. At 15 I was the head of my family. We stayed with different relatives. It was heart breaking to be separate from my siblings. Our relatives viewed us as a burden and made us do extra chores. On birthdays our relatives children got gifts, but we never got any. I studied hard and have am completing a social work degree. I now working part time and saving to bring my family back together. My sister is very sick and our relatives refuse to give her proper medical care.
I am so grateful to be able to stay in the Bodhicitta foundation hostel. I feel supported and that I have found a second family. I have not received any kindness since my parents death. Now I believe in human goodness again and I have hope for the future. I want to be a social worker to help other people who have fallen through the cracks.
Thankyou to everyone who supports us! I am so grateful, because I have seen women who had to become sex workers to survive. Im so glad I can be safe and get an education.’ – Rohini, 19 yrs.
